Russ Edgerton of the Pew Charitable Trust organized a group of scholarly individuals to begin to explore the NSSE in February 1998. The NSSE was supported by an endowment from The Pew Charitable Trusts. In wanting to gain a better understanding, this survey was started for institutions to get a better understanding of the student's experiences. This study was conducted in a successful pilot in 1999 that entailed over seventy-five institutions. During the opening launch in 2000, over two-hundred and seventy-five institutions contributed to this form of assessment and evaluation. This survey offers institutions tools for gaining deeper insights into critical areas of the college’s overall quality. (NSSE, 2017)
Relationship to Student Development Theory(when possible)
The National Survey of Student Engagement relates to Alexander Astin’s theory of Involvement. The involvement theory suggests that students who are committed to the educational experience will encourage deeper thinking in learning and overall development. (Patton, 2016 p. 34) Astin (as cited in Patton, 2016 p. 34) describes involvement as, “the amount of physical and psychological energy that a student devotes to the academic experience.”
